Free Demo Class for two new classes at Together in Motion
Hi all, I'm very excited about two new classes I'll be offering on Wednesday mornings at Together in Motion. (The wonderful Charlene and Marisa will be taking over the Wednesday morning StrollerFit class) The demo is Wednesday, March 10 from 9:30 to 10:15 (Sculpt), and then 10:30-11:20 (Restore the Core) Pre-registration is required. Please RSVP to reserve your spot! Read more here: Two new classes are coming to Together in Motion, and they're perfect for moms of all ages! You can bring your non-mobile babies to the classes. Babysitting for mobile children will be available in the lounge area for a small fee. Mommymuscle sculpt is a 45 minute group exercise class that will help you build long lean muscles and is perfect for moms of all ages and fitness levels. The mommymuscle sculpt format utilizes the mommymuscle bar, a weighted bar and resistance tube combo, that delivers faster results than using just weights or just resistance tubes. New moms are encouraged to workout with their child in a front carrier! This class will meet Wednesdays at 9:30 am. Restore the Core is a 50 minute mat pilates-like class that focuses on form in order to stabilize the muscles of the core. We will work on tightening all of the muscles of the core, including the abdominal muscles, hamstrings, glutes, and thighs. Non-mobile babies are welcome but not required to take class. This class will meet Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Both classes begin March 24th. They run on 8 week sessions, and cost $135 each, including equipment. Be a "Powermom," enroll in both classes, and save! $240 for both classes. Free demo classes on Wednesday, March 10th. *Mommymuscle sculpt at 9:30 am *Restore the Core at 10:30 am

Mandel Center Lunchtime Seminar
This talk will address the inherent difficulties of learning history in high schoolâ?"inherent, because unlike disciplines that use a specialized vocabulary for discussing knowledge and ideas, history draws on the linguistic resources of everyday life. Relying on an eight-month classroom ethnography in a Jerusalem high school, Shane-Sagiv will show how seemingly straightforward notions such as "anti-Semitism" become, in the transaction of classroom life, a site of confusion reflecting the complexity of â??school historyâ??: learning about the past while struggling to find a common ground between disciplinary terms and student knowledge and interests. A close investigation of this confusion calls attention to how the disciplinaryâ?"the everyday and schoolingâ?"may be at cross purposes, and how we may become more astute in dealing with this.

Chava Shane-Sagiv earned both a B.A and M.A. in history from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She taught high school history and has been involved in research and development of educational initiatives in Israel. Chava is interested in the cognitive and socio-cultural processes that influence the learning of history and the relationship between academic learning and identity building. Her doctoral dissertation, which she is completing at the Hebrew University, focuses on how Israeli high school students make sense of their history lessons. She lives with her family in Israel, but is currently spending a year in New Haven, Connecticut.

Cocktail Time in Cuba
By Rogelio Martinez
A new play produced in cooperation with Primary Stages in New York
Directed by Ari Edelson
March 11-14, 2010
Laurie Theater

In partnership with Primary Stages in New York City, long known for introducing new plays by acclaimed playwrights including Horton Foote, A.R. Gurney, Willy Holtzman, Romulus Linney, Donald Margulies, Terrence McNally, John Henry Redwood, John Patrick Shanley, and Lee Blessing, the Brandeis Theater Company presents a new play from Rogelio Martinez, one of the emerging playwrights who participated in the Dorothy Streslin Writer's Group at Primary Stages. Fidel Castro disappeared from public life in August 2006; Michael, an American journalist, travels to an awakening Cuba with hope of interviewing Castro, but first he must navigate a post-Communist labyrinth of quirky bureaucracy. Cuba casts a spell on Michael that lures him away from a life and world he thought he knew and loved.

Made possible through generous support from the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, The Brandeis Arts Council, The Jaffe Foundation and the Herbert and Kim Marie Beigel New Play Fund.

"Cocktail Time in Cuba" was originally commissioned by the Atlantic Theater Company.

March 2010 - Family Matters by Rohinton Mistry
New restaurant -- this one in Newton - - India Paradise. Yes, they have a buffet on weekends! Probable cost: $15 -- includes buffet, tax and tip, plus $1 to support the meetup. (plus cost of any extras ordered from the menu) This month's book, Family Matters, from the author of A Fine Balance. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS ARE POSTED ON THE MESSAGE BOARD! Review from Publishers Weekly: "Warm, humane, tender and bittersweet are not the words one would expect to describe a novel that portrays a society where the government is corrupt, the standard of living is barely above poverty level and religious, ethnic and class divisions poison the community. Yet Mistry's compassionate eye and his ability to focus on the small decencies that maintain civilization, preserve the family unit and even lead to happiness attest to his masterly skill as a writer who makes sense of the world by using laughter, as one of his characters observes. Bombay in the mid-1990s, a once-elegant city in the process of deterioration, is mirrored in the physical situation of elderly retired professor Nariman Vakeel, whose body is succumbing to the progressive debilitation of Parkinsons disease. Narimans apartment, which he shares with his two resentful, middle-aged stepchildren, is also in terrible disrepair. But when an accident forces him to recuperate in the tortuously crowded apartment that barely accommodates his daughter Roxana, her husband and two young boys, family tensions are exacerbated and the limits of responsibility and obligation are explored with a full measure of anguish. In the ensuing situation, everyones behavior deteriorates, and the affecting secret of Narimans thwarted lifetime love affair provides a haunting leitmotif. Light moments of domestic interaction, a series of ridiculous comic situations, ironic juxtapositions and tenderly observed human eccentricities provide humorous relief, as the author of A Fine Balance again explores the tightrope act that constitutes life on this planet. Mistry is not just a fiction writer; he's a philosopher who finds meaning-indeed, perhaps a divine plan in small human interactions. This beautifully paced, elegantly expressed novel is notable for the breadth of its vision as well as its immensely appealing characters and enticing plot."
